Kenny Bumbaco's Electronic Portfolio
Educational Leader
I believe in using evidence-based learning strategies. I have a strong emphasis on reading and writing in my classroom. As part of my effort to promote literacy, I taught the students the RAFT strategy:
I adapted this strategy to the Spanish classroom as la RAFT. To clarify, the white board reads:
Rol - un helado (Ice Cream)
¿A quién? - el que come el helado (The person eating the ice cream)
Formato - una carta (A letter)
Tema - ¿Por qué me comes? (Why are you eating me?)
This was an off-the-wall example for the students. They worked together to complete the strategy on a different RAFT. They had just read Guillermo Samperio's "Tiempo libre." The RAFT I selected for them was:
R: Guillermo Samperio
A: El lector (The Reader)
F: Carta de explicación (Letter of Explanation)
T: ¿Por qué escribí el cuento? (Why did I write the story?)
Since this was my first time using this activity and since I was also co-teaching with another student in the program, we asked the students for feedback afterwards. Their feedback was extremely productive. Many said that they liked this strategy even though they did not like writing. For a fuller view of this activity, please view The RAFT Presentation (MS PowerPoint).
