Professional Competencies
The William and Mary School of Education expects each student teacher to meet expectations in all of thirty professional competencies, which fall into the following six domains:
Foundational Understanding: Understanding of the subject, child development, the role of literacy, the role of Pre K-12 education, and the need for differentiation.
Ability to Plan, Organize, and Prepare for Teaching: Planning standards-based lessons and selecting appropriate instructional techniques and resources.
Teaching Skills: Monitoring student learning; promoting student thinking skills; using a variety of teaching strategies; engaging students; motivating students; providing for differences; teaching based on planned lessons.
Assessment and Evaluation for Learning: Using assessments appropriately to make instructional decisions.
Classroom Management Knowledge and Skills: Building rapport with students; organizing before teaching; using effective classroom procedures; maintaining a safe learning environment; responding appropriately to inappropriate behavior.
Professional Dispositions: Demonstrating a professional demeanor, including a desire for professional development, ethical behavior in all aspects of teaching, reflection on practice, effective communication and collaboration with other professionals, and a potential for teacher leadership.
